How to Calculate Free Margin in Forex Trading

Oct 23, 2026

Understanding Free Margin in Forex

Free margin in Forex represents the amount of capital in a trading account that is available for opening new positions or absorbing losses from existing ones. It is crucial for managing risk and understanding your capacity to trade. Essentially, free margin is the portion of your equity that is not currently tied up as used margin for open trades.

A healthy level of free margin allows a trader to open additional positions, withstand market fluctuations, and avoid a margin call, which occurs when your margin level falls below a broker's required threshold, potentially leading to automatic closure of positions.

The Free Margin Formula

Calculating free margin is straightforward once you understand the core components of your trading account. The basic formula is:

  • Free Margin = Equity - Used Margin

Let's break down each component:

Equity

Equity is the real-time value of your trading account. It reflects your account balance plus or minus the floating (unrealized) profit or loss from all open positions. If you have no open positions, your equity is simply equal to your account balance.

  • Equity = Balance + Floating Profit/Loss

Your balance is the total cash in your account, adjusted for deposits, withdrawals, and realized profits or losses from closed trades.

Used Margin

Used margin, also known as occupied margin or required margin, is the amount of money held by your broker to keep your open positions active. When you open a trade, a portion of your account capital is set aside as margin. This amount is not available for other trades until the position is closed or the margin requirement changes.

The amount of used margin depends on several factors:

  • Instrument: Different currency pairs or other trading instruments may have varying margin requirements.
  • Trade Size: Larger trade volumes (lot sizes) require more margin.
  • Leverage: Leverage significantly impacts margin. Higher leverage means a smaller percentage of the trade value is required as margin, thus freeing up more capital. Conversely, lower leverage requires more margin for the same trade size. RannForex, for example, sets leverage sizes in accordance with counterparty leverages and may reduce maximum leverage on Fridays.

For a single position, used margin can be calculated as:

  • Used Margin = (Contract Size * Lot Size * Opening Price) / Leverage

For example, if you open a 1 standard lot (100,000 units) EUR/USD trade at 1.1000 with 1:500 leverage, the used margin would be (100,000 * 1 * 1.1000) / 500 = 220 USD (assuming your account is denominated in USD).

Practical Application and Importance

Monitoring your free margin is critical for effective risk management. Here's why:

  • Opening New Trades: You can only open new positions if you have sufficient free margin. Brokers, including RannForex, have the right to reject orders if there isn't enough free margin.
  • Margin Level: The margin level is a percentage calculated as (Equity / Used Margin) * 100%. This indicator shows how much of your equity is available relative to the margin used. A high margin level indicates greater safety, while a low margin level signals higher risk.
  • Margin Calls and Stop Out: If your margin level drops too low (e.g., below 60% as per RannForex's terms), it can trigger a margin call or a stop out, where your broker automatically closes your most loss-making positions to prevent further losses and protect their interests. Maintaining a margin level no lower than 100% is generally advised.
  • Pending Orders: When using pending orders, the free margin calculation is performed at the moment of execution, not activation. This means that even if you have enough free margin when you place a pending order, market movements could reduce your free margin by the time the order is triggered, potentially leading to rejection.

Understanding and regularly calculating your free margin helps you make informed decisions, manage risk proactively, and avoid unexpected account closures.
