How to Place Pending Orders in MetaTrader 5

Oct 11, 2026

Placing pending orders in MetaTrader 5 (MT5) allows traders to automate their entry and exit points in the market. Instead of executing a trade immediately at the current market price, a pending order instructs the platform to open or close a position once a specific price level is reached. This is a fundamental tool for managing risk and executing trading strategies effectively, especially in volatile markets or when you cannot monitor the market continuously.

Understanding Pending Orders in MT5

A pending order is a client request to open or close a position when the price reaches a specified level. For buy orders, the Ask price activates the order, while for sell orders, the Bid price is used for activation. This mechanism enables traders to plan trades in advance, capitalizing on anticipated price movements without constant manual intervention.

Types of Pending Orders

MetaTrader 5 offers several types of pending orders, categorized into those for opening new positions and those for managing existing ones:

  • Buy Limit: An order to buy at the current Ask price or lower. This is typically used when you expect the price to momentarily drop before continuing its upward trend.
  • Sell Limit: An order to sell at the current Bid price or higher. Traders use this when they anticipate the price to rise temporarily before resuming a downward movement.
  • Buy Stop: An order to buy at the current Ask price or higher. This is often used when you expect a breakout above a resistance level.
  • Sell Stop: An order to sell at the current Bid price or lower. This order is common for anticipating a breakdown below a support level.
  • Stop Loss: An order designed to limit potential losses on an open position. It automatically closes a trade if the market moves against your position by a specified amount.
  • Take Profit: An order to secure profits when the price reaches a predetermined level. It automatically closes a trade once the market moves in your favor to a specified extent.

How to Place a Pending Order in MetaTrader 5

Placing a pending order in MT5 involves a few straightforward steps:

  1. Open the Order Window: In MT5, you can open the order window by pressing F9, right-clicking on a chart and selecting "Trading" -> "New Order", or by clicking the "New Order" button in the toolbar.
  2. Select "Pending Order" Type: In the order window, locate the "Type" dropdown menu. Change it from "Market Execution" (or "Instant Execution") to "Pending Order".
  3. Choose the Pending Order Type: A new dropdown will appear, allowing you to select one of the specific pending order types: Buy Limit, Sell Limit, Buy Stop, or Sell Stop.
  4. Set the Price: Input the desired price level at which you want the order to be activated. For example, if placing a Buy Limit, this would be a price below the current market price.
  5. Set Stop Loss and Take Profit (Optional but Recommended): In the respective fields, enter the price levels for your Stop Loss and Take Profit orders. These will automatically close your position if the market hits these levels, helping you manage risk and secure profits.
  6. Set Expiry (Optional): You can specify an expiration date and time for your pending order. If the market doesn't reach your desired price level by this time, the order will be automatically canceled. If left unset, the order typically remains active until manually canceled or executed.
  7. Place the Order: Once all parameters are set, click the "Place" button. Your pending order will now appear in the "Trade" tab of the Terminal window, waiting for the market to reach your specified entry point.

Modifying or Deleting a Pending Order

You can easily modify or delete a pending order before it is triggered:

  • To Modify: Right-click on the pending order in the "Trade" tab of the Terminal window and select "Modify or Delete". Adjust the price, Stop Loss, Take Profit, or expiry, then click "Modify".
  • To Delete: Right-click on the pending order in the "Trade" tab and select "Modify or Delete". Then, click the "Delete" button.

Advantages of Using Pending Orders

Utilizing pending orders offers several significant benefits to traders:

  • Automated Trading: They allow you to automate your entry and exit strategies, meaning you don't need to constantly monitor the market.
  • Risk Management: By setting Stop Loss and Take Profit levels in advance, you can define your maximum acceptable loss and target profit, promoting disciplined trading.
  • Capitalize on Volatility: Pending orders are excellent for catching swift price movements or breakouts that might occur when you are not actively watching the market.
  • Time Efficiency: You can plan your trades and set them up during off-peak hours or at your convenience, letting the market execute them when conditions are met.
  • Emotional Discipline: Pre-setting your entry and exit points helps reduce emotional decision-making during live trading, sticking to your pre-defined strategy.

Mastering the use of pending orders in MetaTrader 5 is a crucial skill for any serious trader. It provides the flexibility, control, and automation necessary to execute sophisticated trading strategies and manage risk effectively in the dynamic financial markets, ensuring you can participate in opportunities even when you're not at your desk.
