What Is Netting Mode in MetaTrader 5?

Oct 13, 2026

Understanding Netting Mode in MetaTrader 5

Netting mode in MetaTrader 5 refers to a specific system of managing trading positions where only one open position is allowed per financial instrument. This means that for any given instrument, such as EUR/USD, a trader can have only a single position open at any time. All subsequent orders on that same instrument will either modify the existing position or close it out.

How Netting Mode Works

When operating in netting mode, new orders for a financial instrument interact with any existing position as follows:

  • New order in the same direction: If you have an open buy position on EUR/USD and place another buy order for EUR/USD, the new order will increase the volume of your existing buy position. The entry price of the combined position will be recalculated as a weighted average.
  • New order in the opposite direction: If you have an open buy position on EUR/USD and place a sell order for EUR/USD, the sell order will either partially or fully close your existing buy position. If the sell volume is greater than the buy volume, the remaining volume will establish a new sell position.

This approach consolidates all trades for a single instrument into one aggregated position, simplifying the tracking of profit and loss for that specific asset.

Netting Mode vs. Hedging Mode

MetaTrader 5 supports both netting and hedging modes, allowing brokers to offer either option to their clients. While netting mode restricts you to one position per instrument, hedging mode allows traders to open multiple positions on the same financial instrument, even in opposite directions. For example, in hedging mode, you could simultaneously hold both a buy and a sell position on EUR/USD. The choice between these modes significantly impacts how a trader manages their exposure and strategy. Advantages of Netting Mode

  • Simplicity: Position management is often simpler as there's only one P&L to track per instrument.
  • Clear overview: Traders get a clear, consolidated view of their total exposure to any single market at a glance.
  • Reduced margin requirements: In some cases, netting can lead to lower overall margin requirements compared to holding multiple individual positions, though this depends on the broker's policies.

Considerations for Traders

Netting mode is particularly suited for traders who prefer a straightforward approach to managing their risk and positions. It encourages a clear directional bias for each instrument and can be beneficial for strategies that focus on single, consolidated market views. Traders who wish to employ more complex strategies involving simultaneous long and short positions on the same asset, perhaps for risk management or arbitrage, would typically opt for hedging mode.
