Balance vs Equity in Forex Trading: Understanding Your Account Value

Nov 5, 2026

In Forex trading, understanding the difference between your account's balance and equity is fundamental for managing your capital and assessing your real-time financial standing. While often confused, these two metrics represent distinct aspects of your trading account, especially when you have open positions.

What is Balance in Forex Trading?

Your account balance represents the total amount of money in your trading account, excluding the floating (unrealized) profits or losses from any currently open positions. It reflects the funds available from all closed trades, deposits, and withdrawals. When you have no open trades, your balance and equity will be identical.

  • Closed Positions: Profits or losses from trades that have been fully executed and closed are added to or subtracted from your balance.
  • Deposits and Withdrawals: Any funds added to or removed from your account directly affect the balance.
  • No Floating P/L: Unrealized gains or losses on active trades do not impact the balance until those trades are closed.

What is Equity in Forex Trading?

Equity is the real-time value of your trading account. It is calculated by taking your current balance and adding or subtracting the floating (unrealized) profits or losses from all your open positions. Equity provides a dynamic snapshot of your account's worth, showing what your account would be valued at if you were to close all open trades at the current market prices.

The formula for equity is:

Equity = Balance + Floating Profit (of open positions) - Floating Loss (of open positions)

  • Real-time Value: Equity constantly fluctuates with market movements as the floating profit or loss on your open positions changes.
  • Impact on Margin: Equity is crucial for determining your free margin and margin level, which are vital for opening new trades and avoiding stop-out events.

The Key Difference: Open Positions

The core distinction between balance and equity lies in the treatment of open positions. Balance only considers realized profits and losses, while equity incorporates unrealized profits and losses. This means:

  • If you have no open positions, Balance = Equity.
  • If you have open positions with floating profits, Equity > Balance.
  • If you have open positions with floating losses, Equity < Balance.

Why Does This Matter for Traders?

Understanding both metrics is crucial for effective risk management and trading decisions:

  • Margin Level Calculation: Your margin level, a key indicator of your account's health, is calculated based on your equity. A declining equity due to floating losses will reduce your margin level, potentially leading to a margin call or stop-out.
  • Opening New Trades: The amount of available margin (free margin) is derived from your equity. If your equity is low due to significant floating losses, you may not have sufficient free margin to open new positions.
  • True Account Value: Equity gives you the most accurate representation of your account's actual value at any given moment, reflecting the true impact of your active trades.

Example Scenario

Let's consider a trader named Alex:

  • Alex deposits $1,000 into a trading account.
  • Initial Balance: $1,000
  • Initial Equity: $1,000

Alex opens a trade. The required margin for this trade is $100.

  • While the trade is open, it goes into a floating profit of $50.
  • Balance: $1,000 (still reflects only closed trades and deposits)
  • Equity: $1,000 (Balance) + $50 (Floating Profit) = $1,050

Later, the market moves against Alex, and the trade is now at a floating loss of $70.

  • Balance: $1,000
  • Equity: $1,000 (Balance) - $70 (Floating Loss) = $930

If Alex closes the trade for a loss of $70:

  • Balance: $1,000 - $70 = $930
  • Equity: $930 (since there are no open positions, balance and equity are equal again)

This example highlights how equity constantly changes with market fluctuations, while the balance only updates once trades are closed or funds are moved.
